<p dir="auto">However, if I connect it directly to the MacBook Pro (running macOS Catalina and with the proper driver installed), the serial port is not even detected by the OS.</p>
<p dir="auto">Is that expected? Or is there a newer driver available? (I'm using version 2.4.2 downloaded <a href="https://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">here</a>)</p>

I installed the update already, and it works (I no longer need to jump G0 to GND to flash). However, I still can't use a USB-C to USB-C cable directly, need to go through a USB-C hub.</p>

<p dir="auto">There looks to be ongoing internal issues with OSX Catalina. if you have it working through a hub then continue to use the hub.<br />
Unfortunately it looks like the issue is with Apple.</p>
