Analog to I2C Unit 4-20mA Input modules on ESp8266

I have purchased two of the single channel 4-20ma input modules for a project which uses the ESp8266 processor. I have been able to compile the example for the ESP but when loaded it reports No Module. I can see the module at 55 with an i2c scanner but not control it
I have seen the issue raised on github about using other processors and have tried to modify the library with no success. I can load the module on an ESP32 board
Is there aproblem with using any other board except an ESp32?
Also does the module work with 3.3V instead on 5V
