CoreS3 Lite virtual buttons B and C not working

I am trying to move a program from a cores3 SE to a cores3 Lite. The M5.BtnB.was_pressed() and M5.BtnC.was_pressed() no longer seem to be working.
I might have expected the middle button not to work (due to the camera), but it's weird that hte button C is not working, while working perfectly on the cores3 SE (same exact script).
Are the virtual buttons different on the Lite vs SE?
