@jeffb no, no, no don't edit the files! There are 2 causes for the error that has plagued M5Stack since the beginning. 1st - driver issue. the driver is temperamental in osx and often does not work. 2nd and most important as its the biggest issue. The factory USB leads are often faulty and or just rubbish. Always use a high quality USB sync/data lead. something over the £10/$10 price range and never fold the lead, always roll it. I had this issue when I first started as I have only OSX. Also, when you install any new board or library in arduino, ALWAYS close arduino and restart it!

@easytarget Yes, that's exactly what it is. Which is what I disagree with! :) No other M5 device I'm aware of defaults to turning off. It's a terrible design decision and one that should exclude the Stick from consideration for anything that needs reliable, temporary battery power from the internal battery. You cannot rely on this thing staying on, regardless of how you interact with the "HOLD" pin. It works fine under any form of external power. The internal battery is useless. Which is sad because my use case was that when an external power source failed, it would go to the internal battery and software would notice the decline in voltage and alert. If your reboot took 110ms, instead of the normal 90ms (arbitrary, wrong), you are down. Just my opinion! M.

Hello @paulgrevink have you tried to disconnect everything from M5StickCPlus2 and fully powering it off by pressing and holding the power button? Also have you tried to erase flash using M5Burner before installing UIFlow2 firmware? BTW: I did a test and installed ESPHome basic firmware, then installed UIFlow2.3.8 firmware and then ran M5StickCPlus2_GPIO32_GPIO33_ON_OFF_UiFlow2.2.0 from Project Zone without issue, e.g GPIO32 and GPIO33 toggle just fine between 0 V and 3.3 V. Note: While ESPHome was installed GPIO32 measured something like 0.2 V. Thanks Felix

For anyone still interested. I know I wil be likely banned for this but this post is old and will probably not be checked. First of all, remove the sticker on the back. Then remove the 2 screws near the UART port. Take off the top part of the M5StickC. You should see the board and the screen now. If your goal is to remove the screen, then just rip off the side that is closer to the edge and unsolder the connections on the other side of the screen. The screen should be off now. For people who want to change the battery or do other modifications you can take 2 paths from here. 1st path includes unsoldering some connections. 2nd path is safer, but looks sketchy. Anyways be careful since if you damage a line/wire, it can result in some features not working. I accidentally beheaded my home button while disassemblying my M5StickC. 1st path: There are multiple little soldering points on the sides of the screen. Unsolder them and pull out the motherboard. Be careful, the battery is still attached. 2nd path: Take off the GPIO pin cover. Pull it away from the main case (parallel to the longest side of the M5StickC). You should see multiple fork-like connectors now. After that you can take the board out. And that should be everything. Everything else is straightforward. wanna change a butto? Unsolder it, resolder a new one. I am not helping you here. Good luck!

Thanks @robski. I tried the latest 2.3.1 , the oldest 2.0.3 and more. I just tried again, Now it works with 2.0.3 and up to 2.2.6 2.2.7 and newer ones i get this weird black screen with some elements showing up when pressing buttons, as in the screenshot above. in some cases, i could not burn a lower version until i used the erase option before burning. EDIT: now i realized with 2.2.7 and up to 2.3.1 although the screen is black on bootup, it connects to the cloud and i can send programs to it. So, form 2.2.7 on just the UI broken.

@ajb2k3 Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the Vbus is supposed to be. I thought it was the power coming in from the USB port. Even if there is a trickle of stuff draining the battery, there shouldn't be any input from USB. I suppose something is just leaking over somehow.

Yes, this is a common issue with M5Stick C flashing. Try holding the G0 button while connecting the USB cable to enter bootloader mode, then start the flash. Also, double-check your USB drivers and try a different USB port directly on your PC (avoid hubs). If problems persist, adding a 10µF capacitor between EN and GND can help stabilize the reset line. Make sure the serial port is correctly selected, and close other apps using it. This usually resolves the “Failed to connect to ESP32” errors.
